Everyone Knows...

Everyone knows, well, that really depends on what aspect of life you are talking about. When talking about music, everyone (in the know) knows that you don’t make money until much later. Rockstars aren’t just made. Just because you’ve been on tour across the world doesn’t mean that you have money. My friends FFTL are in this situation. They have been on multiple cross country and worldwide tours, have opened for Kiss, the Cure, etc., yet they are practically homeless. Part of it is due to mismanagement of funds, part of it is due to politics of the music industry, and part of it is due to the fact that they were young, just wanted to party, and thought that this would last forever. They are finding out now that it doesn’t.

If you’re talking about waitressing, everyone knows that people suck. Well not everyone, just those non-tippers. Waitresses don’t make a lot of money- they don’t even make minimum wage, so in order to live off of waitressing, the staff relies on the tips from customers. The government even has a standard way of taxing waiters and waitresses, assuming that they make the customary 10% tip off of every table. It’s great if that always happens, but it doesn't. As a former waitress myself, I find myself over-tipping often because I know what it’s like to be in their shoes.

  • I'm an over-tipper, too. I have never waited tables, but I've had many friends who have. I know they complained all the time about not making ANYTHING. Also, when I was young and broke and in college, I often tipped on the lower end of the scale. I've always felt bad about it, so I try now to make sure that I tip well.
