Urban Legends
These are some urban legends from my childhood:
Boogie Man’s Bottom
So, when I was a kid there was an urban legend. There was a street that led away from our house called Boogie Man’s Bottom. The street was kind of strange because as you walked you literally started going down. In one section there was wooded area on both sides of the street and it looked very scary. Well, the legend was that it was called Boogie Man’s Bottom because the Boogie Man lived there, and if you were caught down there at night he would get you and you’d never be heard from again.
So, at night we kids stayed away! But as we got older and liked taking chances we would “think” about going down there. Once I decided to chance it. I was riding my bike and decided that instead of going all the way around, I would go through Boogie Man’s Bottom—after all I was too mature to believe in such nonsense. So, with some degree of speed of course, I rode down Boogie Man’s Bottom. But once there, I started to notice that the trees were shaking and there were odd sounds. Somebody was following me. But when I looked back I didn’t see anyone. So I high tailed it out of there. Noone ever had to tell me again not to go down Boogie Man’s Bottom. Since then, that area has been cleared for houses and church, and is not as wooded anymore. But, I kind of feel sorry for the people living down there. I’m sure the spirit of the Boogie Man haunts them.
The Alligator named Fred
We lived close to the railroad tracks, so it was always tempting to go down there and play by the tracks. But, we didn’t! We were told that Fred lived down there and he would eat you. Fred was a big alligator. They said he was 6 feet or longer. I can’t remember. But, Fred had been known eat children. They say that some people had to pull somebody out of Fred’s mouth one time because he was about to eat them whole. The oddest thing is an alligator was indeed found down there. Was it Fred? I guess we’ll never know.
