Fall - The Best Ever

Fall is absolutely the best time of year. As soon as I start feeling that crispness in the mornings, I know fall is on the way. My favorite memories of fall are of the fair. The fair always came to town at the beginning of October, and the air was just beginning to get cool at night. My best friend and I would get my mom to take us to the fair and leave us for hours. Oh how I loved this. We would walk around and around looking for boys. I found so many loves there. Funny how the scene changes as I grow older. I went a couple of years ago and was appalled at the nastiness of it all. Was it that nasty when I was there and I just didn’t notice or has it grown more disgusting? I’m not sure. Regardless, I associate my favorite fall memories to the fair.

  • Man, I stinkin' love Fall. And the fair. Just the atmosphere of the fair. And fair food. Like cotton candy, candy apples, and funnel cakes. Not so much the rides. ; ) I can't believe YOU, Mary Poppins, are worried about germs! Haha! Kidding! Man, I miss you!

  • This comment is more directed at the fair than fall. When I was young, my family always went to the fair. My family was poor, so the fair was almost like a mini-vacation when I was little. However, some of my worst memories are from the fair. When I was six, my mom finally let me ride a "big-kid" ride, which, in this case, was the ferris wheel. I discover, quickly, that I was terrified of heights, but when the ride finished, I was elated with my "big-kid" experience. I ran through the crowd to find my mom and share my excitement with her. As I ran, I collided with someone's hand. (I was at the perfect height to be eye level with most grown-ups' hands.) I felt a burning sensation and immediately shrilled at the feeling. I had taken a cigarette to the eye. My mom was mortified and rushed me to the ER. I received an eye patch for one week, as the burn only singed my eye lashed and burned a portion of the skin below my eye. I refused to attend that week of kindergarten.

About ten years later, I went to the fair, as usual. As I wondered to the crowd, my eye stumbled across my boyfriend. (I hate using that word when I talk about my "I'm-a-fifteen-year-old-hormonal-teenager" memories.) He was with another girl, a fellow dancer of mine. I found a bench next to total strangers and began to cry. How crazy is that? How weird did the poor people next to me think I was? A crying girl, at the fair, sobbing with no one she knows around her. I found a friend, with a car, thankfully, and asked to be taken home. Needless to say, I did not return to the fair.

Now that I am older, married, and surrounded by nieces and nephews, the fair adventures are back on. My job, I guess, is to give them better experiences. Maybe the cool bite of the fall air will bring nostalgia, and these less-than-perfect memories will be swept away by the smell of gasoline from the derby races, the sweet scent of hay at the petting zoo, and the fried-then-covered-in-sugar odor that wraps around the poignant aroma of sausage dogs and processed mustard.

  • My fair memory:

I'm in the ferris wheel thing that is a cage and you spin it yourself. Next to me is the guy I'm in love with. He has these beautiful blue eyes that I always get lost in. I've had a crush on him for over two years. Since ninth grade and it's now eleventh grade. I want to prove that I'm not lame and can handle the cage spinning ferris wheel so I spin it as fast as I can. Once we finally get off the ride I realize his personal parts have been squashed against the lap bar the entire time. He won't/can't talk for about 10 minutes. All of which I'm repeatedly apologizing and praying my eyes are just as intoxicating as his. We never went out again. And just for the record: I am a million times more stunning than his current girlfriend. And that's not just fantasy Nikki world talking.
